Paying Portuguese taxes from abroad – How on earth do I do this?

Have you ever had difficulties to pay your Portuguese taxes from abroad? There are a few solutions, all depending on what you have set up in Portugal.

FIRST and easiest OPTION is when you have a Portuguese bank account and access to online banking. In this case, you can pay all taxes via the option 'payment to the state' with a reference number stated on the tax bill.

If you don't have a Portuguese bank account, or, you do but don't have access to the online banking it gets a bit more complicated. However, there are a second and third option to explore depending on whether or not you have access to Portugal's Online Financial website (Portal das Finanças).

NOTE: You can apply for a password whenever you are in Portugal by stepping into a Finance Office. Or you can apply for it online, but it very often goes wrong (don't ask us why).

So according to the following premises you have 2 more options:

SECOND OPTION: you have access to the Portal das Finanças: then you can install a DIRECT DEBIT, and even connect it to a foreign bank account (or a Portuguese bank account, but if you have this, you might as well take the easy road and get your online banking operational). The benefit of DIRECT DEBIT is that all taxes (IMI or AIMI (yearly tax on your property), IUC for your car, etc) are automatically paid, you can sleep tight.

THIRD OPTION: you don't have access to the Portal das Finanças: Then you can choose for a BANK TRANSFER (from a foreign or Portuguese bank account) whenever you receive a tax bill at home (double check if you receive them, this can also go wrong sometimes). Make sure you provide your bank with the information set out below for correct identification of the payment at the Portuguese Tax Administration.

  • • TIN: 600 084 779
  • • Name of the creditor: Autoridade Tributária e Aduaneira
  • • Bank account number: 83 69 27
  • • IBAN: PT50 0781 0019 00000008369 27
  • • Bank name: Agência de Gestão da Tesouraria e da Dívida Pública – IGCP, E.P.E.
  • • Swift code: IGCPPTPL
  • • Your tax identification number — NIF — contained in the payment document 3 | 3
  • • And the reference for payment: Each reference corresponds to a specific number for payment, which is set out in the document.

Please find all specifics on the last 2 options in the link below.
